Today the Mighty Whites welcomed Grimsby Lionesses for our return home league fixture. Having played them a couple of weeks ago in Grimsby we knew this would be a very tough game against a side we’d never beaten before.

We couldn’t have asked for more from the girls today and they were fast out of the blocks scoring after only 30 seconds on the clock with Hammo finding a way through the Grimsby defence to fire us ahead. Not long after it was the Emily’s combining to make it 2-0 on five minutes with another cool finish this time from Emily F. The pressure and goals continued with Hammo adding a third on 12 minutes and then her corner finding Emily F on 15 minutes to make it 4-0. Grimsby always looked dangerous and were rapid on the break but our defence stood strong up until 23 minutes when Grimsby scored their first goal. Halftime score 4-1

After the break it was Grimsby that started strongest and they found the back of the net on 31 minutes. In previous games against the Lionesses they had always finished games strongly and that was no different today but Los Blancos counteracted them with intensity, dogged defending and playing on the front foot. We scored our fifth goal on 35 minutes with Hammo completing her hat trick and then Skylar adding a sixth on 40 minutes with her trade mark rocket from distance. Grimsby never gave up and our defence, midfield and keeper put in an almighty shift to keep them at bay until the final whistle.

The coaches couldn’t pick out any individual player for the match award today so we opted to give it to the whole team for such an impressive performance and result.

The parent’s player award went to Emilia after a commanding display between the sticks. She made vital saves, collected everything that came her way and her distribution was on point throughout.

It wasn’t all about the football today though as both teams worked together to support World Down Syndrome day and sported odd socks to mark the occasion.
